Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long is the Academy?
The Capital Guardian Youth ChalleNGe Academy is divided by 3 phases. Acclimation, Residential and Post Residential. Acclimation is 2 weeks, the Residential Phase is 20 weeks right after acclimation, and the third phase is Post- Residential. That is a 1 year follow up where you go back home and begin accomplishing your goals with the assistance of your mentor(s), your case manager, and your family.
Do I get my High School Diploma?
During the Residential Phase, you will be attending classes to obtain your High School Diploma. If you pass all four sections of the Pearson Vue exam, then you will receive a District of Columbia High School Diploma accredited by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, Washington, DC.
Do I have to join the military service after the program?
No, only if it is your choice. Although we are a National Guard program no youth will be pressured to enlist in any branch of the military. Historically only 10% of graduates decide to join the military, most seek continued education or enter the workforce. We will guide you to achieve your post graduation goals in Education or the workforce. You are in no way obligated to join the District of Columbia National Guard even though they are a sponsor of the Academy.
Can I force my child to attend this program?

The decision to attend must be made by the child and his/her parents or guardian. The applicant must demonstrate that they understand what our program is and that they are willing to participate in our highly structured, quasi-military program.
